Environmental Quality

One idea must land: environmental quality flows through five channels — damage one and liveability feels it. The future depends on how well the job is done.

The creek fills the screen and the room goes quiet: “Stand here for a second. Really look.” A sensory 3-2-1 puts every student inside the picture — then their own mission data returns to prove their families already care about this. The five channels get locked in by a four-format quiz, the news breaks (a mine is proposed 2 km upstream), and students write both futures honestly before hunting real WA evidence online, five minutes on the clock, source required.

Five silent seconds on the creek, then the 3-2-1: three sounds, two smells, one thing you’d feel. Then the promised share: hands up if an adult mentioned nature, quiet, space or fresh air. Students record the rough class count.

Say it: “your own families just proved today’s lesson matters — environmental quality was already in their answers.” The mission data being USED is what makes the next mission land.

The five channels + the quiz

One pass: AIR · WATER · NOISE · LAND & SOIL · PLANTS & ANIMALS — every sense from the 3-2-1 maps to a channel. Then the quiz, fast and fun: two multiple choice, two true-false-and-fix-it, one odd-one-out. The skate park is the sharpest item — it’s liveability, but not environmental quality. That boundary is the learning.

Q3 exists to kill the biggest misconception in the room: noise DOES count. Watch how many vote false.

The news, the two futures, the hunt

Read the news aloud, then the honesty framing: mining can be done badly AND carefully — in WA, big projects must pass environmental assessment and companies must rehabilitate the land after. Students write both futures, channels named. Then devices out: five minutes, pairs, driver-and-scribe swap halfway — find one real WA example of damage or rehabilitation. No source, no evidence.

Harvest three finds aloud and aim for one of each kind — the honesty has to land both ways. That’s the program’s brand.

The long answer joins Lesson 1 to Lesson 2: their own top five, two channels named, one imagined drop in quality. Exit: five channels from memory, a circle-one concept check, the sentence they’d say to a mining boss — and the thinking seed for Lesson 3: what would a mine have to PROVE before you said yes?
